Heart diseases can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms. CT Coronary Angiography is an advanced imaging test that helps doctors examine the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart and identify possible narrowing or blockages.
What Is CT Coronary Angiography?
CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) uses computed tomography (CT) imaging and contrast dye to create detailed pictures of the heart’s blood vessels. It is a non-surgical diagnostic test that can help assess coronary artery disease.
Who Needs This Heart Test?
A cardiologist may recommend CT Coronary Angiography for patients who:
Experience chest pain or unexplained discomfort that may indicate coronary artery disease.
Have symptoms such as breathlessness that require evaluation for a possible heart condition.
Have risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of early heart disease.
Need further assessment after an initial cardiac evaluation.
Have an unclear diagnosis following other tests, when CTCA is considered appropriate.
The test is not necessary for everyone. A cardiologist determines its suitability based on symptoms, medical history, examination, and other test results.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
During the test, the patient lies on a CT scanner table while images of the heart are captured. Contrast dye is usually injected through a vein to make the coronary arteries more visible. The procedure is generally quick and does not involve surgical incisions.
Patients should inform their doctor about kidney problems, previous contrast-dye reactions, pregnancy, and current medications before the scan.
Why Is Early Heart Evaluation Important?
Identifying coronary artery disease can help doctors plan appropriate treatment, which may include medication, lifestyle changes, or further procedures when needed. However, CTCA is not suitable for every patient, and the choice of test depends on individual circumstances.
